Humble Beginnings
Homebrewing is a passion which consumes millions of Americans nationwide. For us, it has turned in an obsession! It began by brewing out of small 10 gallon pots with propane burners. Over time, it has evolved into homemade computers running electric elements, pumps, glycol chillers and stainless steel chonical fermenters. Our obsession has generated ideas which in turn lends itself to opportunity. We are excited to bring our carefully crafted products to our community!
Product Development
Having a great product doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years of planing, experimenting and working with others to determine not only the best ingredients, but also the best techniques to gain the desired results. This is why Monkey Dog beers are of exceptional quality, we chose not to rush the process and chose to deliver the highest-quality product to you.
What's with the Name?
There isn't much printed about the Monkey Dog, however, a local urban legend seems to tell it all.
In the early 1900's a circus train derailed just on the north side of Columbia, SC in a small town called Irmo. Following the crash, a group of circus monkeys escaped and mated with a local farm dog. That's when the "Monkey Dog" was born. For decades following, rumors of the Monkey Dog spread among the locals with stories of this creature terrifying kids as they walked home from school through the woods.
Truth be told, I've never encountered the monkey dog while growing up in Irmo, however I have heard some things I can't explain coming from those woods!
A more accurate account would be an old creek bridge hidden in the woods many called the "Monkey Dog Road," which became a frequented place where many drank beer and indulged in other indecencies while growing up in that area. While the origins are somewhat unknown, what is know is the community which was built around this story and this place. It is our goal to create a place where your own memories can be made and shared with your friends and family.
